With the New Year right around the corner, I know we are all looking to say “bye bye” to the holiday sweets and treats and “hello!” to healthier habits. Some of us may even have specific health goals on our resolution list for 2017. Whether you are looking to make simple tweaks or give your lifestyle an overhaul, let me introduce you to my favorite superfoods to kick your smoothie up a notch!

If you’ve been a frequent visitor on this blog or you follow me on Instagram, you know that I have a slight obsession with smoothies. They are what I call “nutritional goldmines”, as you can pack so many nutrient-dense foods into one glass.
Today, I’m going to fill you in a little secret of mine. I love to make smoothies at home and am somewhat of a superfood junkie. I’ve found that by incorporating superfoods into my diet, I’ve experienced more energy, have seen my skin become clearer and more radiant, and felt healthier from the inside out.
In my house, you can’t make a smoothie without adding in at least a few additional superfoods. These nutritional gems are what give my smoothies that extra boost in the nutrition department and what I believe have kicked my health up a notch, too.
Below are my 10 favorite superfood smoothie add-ins that can all be found on the Swanson Health Products website (usually at a much more affordable price than your local health foods store!).
Hemp Seeds are a natural source of complete protein (which is hard to find in plant-based foods!), and are an excellent source of essential fatty acids and fiber.
Maca powder is an excellent way to add energizing nutrition to your smoothie and has a slightly nutty taste that adds delicious flavor!
If you’ve never heard of Manuka honey, consider it the superfood version of the honey bear. Manuka honey is sourced from bees that pollinate the manuka bush and has a higher level of enzymes than regular honey. (Side note: The higher the K factor, the stronger it is!)
This is one of the more recent superfoods I’ve added in my smoothies! Mushroom powders have amazing health benefits, ranging from boosting energy, the immune system and concentration.
Cacao Powder is the raw form of cocoa powder and is cold-pressed to protect the nutrients. It is an excellent source of antioxidants, fiber and magnesium.
These powders are amazing and I try to use them daily! They are especially great for traveling or when you need an energy boost. These alkalizing green superfood green powders help you achieve your daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables and come in a variety of flavors.
Goji berries, also known as “wolf berries” are an excellent source of vitamins A and C and have over 20 trace minerals and vitamins.
One thing on my list to do more of in the New Year is drinking herbal teas daily. They offer an array of benefits, everything from soothing the stomach, to detoxifying the liver, to promoting a healthy glow!
I was first introduced to chlorella by Mckel Hill from Nutrition Stripped. It is a blue-green algae and contains the highest amounts of chlorophyll known.
Chia seeds are an excellent source of complete proteins and healthy fats. They also contain a high amount of fiber and antioxidants to promote health and vitality.
Are you feeling a little overwhelmed? If you don’t recognize a lot of these superfoods, don’t worry! Start with a few and slowly add the others in over time. The superfoods I use most often are: Maca powder, Manuka honey, green superfoods powder and chia seeds. These would be a great place to start!
